- Diagnosis
- Fruit consisting of a persistent pedicellate
hypogynous five-lobed calyx with a thickened central
disk supporting one or occasionally two globose to ellipsoidal
fruit bodies. Early stages in fruit formation showing one or
two whorls of five apocarpous ovaries near the margin of the
floral disk. Each carpel with a single style. Corolla and stamens
unknown. Calyx widely concave, lobes entire margined, equal
to subequal, elliptical to obovate, apices rounded; sinuses between
lobes of calyx acute, deeply incised. Venation of calyx
lobes consisting usually of five main longitudinal veins; the
midvein slightly stronger, the outer pairs successively weaker,
all arising independently from the base, sometimes dichotomizing
in course to apex. Secondary veins arising from the
longitudinal veins at acute angles, commonly meeting those
from adjacent longitudinal veins to form distally arching cross
veins and forming loops at the margin. Cuticle of calyx, when
preserved, showing abaxial lower epidermis with elongate epidermal
cells and longitudinally aligned sunken stomata.
