- Diagnosis
- Herbaceous lycopsid. Stems branch dichotomously. Leaf bases circular or slightly elliptical. Persistent leaves four forked and arranged in low helices or alternating pseudowhorls. Stem having a solid strand of primary xylem. Primary xylem exarch. Metaxylem tracheids mainly scalariform elements; connecting threads (Williamson’s striations) present between scalariform bars. Protoxylem tracheids appear as minute ridges on stele surface in transverse section. Primary phloem in a narrow band surrounding the stele. Cortex relatively thick and possibly two zoned. Leaf traces mesarch; they originate directly from protoxylem points and traverse the cortex at a stable oblique angle. Fertile morphology unknown.
