- Diagnosis
- Irregularly non-geniculate, fasciculate branched
or botryoidal thallus showing a coaxial dimerous organization.
The medulla (formerly hypothallus) is composed of elongate
polygonal cells, coaxially arranged in arched rows. The cells
of the cortex (formerly perithallus) are curved towards the
medulla in the ventral part of the cortex (or ventral cortex) and
sub-perpendicular to the outer part of the medulla (dorsal cortex).
Cells in the ventral cortex are elongate, and partitions are
rare and irregularly distributed. Cell fusions are observed, commonly
in the transitional zone between the ventral and dorsal
cortex. Questionable reproductive organs, as sporangia-like
structures, sparsely distributed in the cortex or organized in
clusters.
