- Secondary xylem with a wood structure of stem:
growth layers distinct with an abrupt transition
from early to late wood. late wood zone composed
only of 2-5 layers of cells; constant diameter
of tracheids from first to last early wood,
tracheids with 1-2 bordered pits on radial walls.
arranged oppositely if two rows, crassulae rarely
and feebly developed; spiral thickenings in the
tracheids and resin canals absent; wood parenchyma
sparse with smooth horizontal cell walls.
rays uniseriate, in late wood slightly widened,
1-6 cells high, cells of variable size and shape,
in the cross-field 2-5 large taxodioide pits, horizontal
axis 16-18 m, if five pits in the crossfield,
than arranged as the five points of a dice,
horizontal and vertical walls of rays smooth
(abietineous pitting absent).
