- Diagnosis
- Fruit globose to oblate, 3.8–
4.5 mm in diameter, smooth, containing 4 to 6 seeds. Outermost
portion of fruit 0.1–0.5 mm thick, resistant with scattered dark
stone cells; inner part, in which the seeds are embedded, lacks
preserved cells except for axial placentary fi brovascular bundles.
Seeds smooth, subtriangular in cross section with cuneate
ventral surface and rounded dorsal surface. Seeds within unripe
fruit 1.3–1.7 mm wide, 0.8–1.4 mm in dorsiventral thickness,
1.7–1.8 mm high. Mature isolated seeds larger, 2.5–2.8 mm wide,
2.0 mm in dorsiventral thickness, 3.6–4.0 mm high. Endosperm
cavity T-shaped to M-shaped in equatorial cross section. Apex
rounded, not grooved; base narrowed to a blunt beak. Two ventral
infolds, one on each ventral facet, about 1/3 the length of
the seed, parallel to each other as viewed ventrally. Dorsal surface
smooth, with chalazal knot small, elliptical, and confi ned
to central portion. Sclerotesta ~100 μ m thick in immature seeds,
to 420 μ m in mature isolated seeds, composed of anticlinal columnar
cells in a biseriate arrangement. Sclerotesta maintaining
moderate thickness within each ventral infold and following a
U-shaped course as seen in transverse section.
