- Small axes (c. 2 mm wide) oval in cross section. Primary xylem
a bar-shaped protostele >1 mm wide. Several mesarch protoxylem strands present
close to stele tips and along xylem midline. Metaxylem tracheids of widely variable
diameter up to >100 μm wide, with angular outline and Psilophyton-type secondary
wall thickenings. Secondary growth present. Inner cortex parenchymatous, wide to
narrower. Outer cortex thinner, primarily sclerenchymatous, houses bell-shaped substomatal
chambers. Epidermal cells small, isodiametric to radially elongated (in cross
sections), often sclerified.
