Diagnosis
Secondary fertile shoot 5 mm long and 3.5 mm wide, circular in transverse section. Pith of isodiametric parenchymatous cells ;50 mm in diameter, some infilled with dark contents. Primary xylem with radially aligned tracheids, five to six cells thick, and with spiral and scalariform thickening. Cortex parenchymatous. Scales borne helically on the secondary fertile shoot. Vegetative scales at least 40; basal about eight scales thin and narrow and with abaxially developed hypodermal sclerenchyma cells; more distal vegetative scales fleshy and lacking hypodermal sclerenchyma cells. Fertile scales probably 10–15, located at the apical region of the secondary fertile shoot. Pollen sacs attached terminally to apices of extended fertile scales, borne in groups of four to six (typically five), maturing sequentially.
