Diagnosis
Coniferous wood with distinct growth rings. The transition from the early to late wood is abrupt. Tracheids in the early wood wider than in the late wood; the pits in the radial walls of the early wood tracheids occur in one to two vertical rows, opposite, occasionally alternate, when in contact with each other usually flattened. Crassulae present. Axial parenchyma rare, with thin smooth and only sometimes slightly nodular transverse end walls. Rays homocellular and uniseriate, up to 30 cells high. Horizontal and tangential ray-walls thick and smooth. Cross-field pits small, predominantly taxodioid and typically two to three per field.
