- Thallus membranous, calcified, obconical, forming an angle of 15-60 degrees with substrate, often lobed and wavy at upper edges; vertical folds of membrane with increasing complexity as individual thalli expanded upward; central base tapered toward substrate suggesting an original holdfast or rhizoids; membrane differentiated internally into a variably preserved bilateral outer cortex of closely appressed, discrete, parallel calcite packets or utricular molds oriented perpendicular to surface of thallus; central medulla most commonly infilled with mosaic sparry calcite, rarely having irregular, branching, loosely woven filaments oriented lengthwise, parallel to surface of thallus; reproductive structures not observed.
