Thalli aggregated in tufts, each bipolar and unicellular, with basal system of intramatrical, branched rhizoids; extramatrical hyphae arising from large unbranched basal cell to form axile, isomorphic thalli, each producing different reproductive structures; hyphae sometimes curled, with several orders of dichotomous (occasionally polytomous) or sympodial branches; sympodial branches arising secondarily just below terminal reproductive structures; hyphae non-septate and occasionally constricted by slight ringlike thickenings, septum always formed where reproductive structures attached; sporothallus branching sympodially up to three times and bearing terminal, globose to bulb-shaped, solitary zoosporangia and thick-walled, globose resting sporangia with closely spaced reticulate pits; discharge papillae lacking. Zoospores ellipsoidal, with opaque inclusion.
