- Thallus cylindrical with terminal branches cylindrical or cone-shaped. Cells open at base and taper outward or maintain their cylindrical form. Branch "walls" generally appear fused due to poorly developed or recrystallized dark outer "wall" layer. Branch "walls" have two or three layers, consisting of a thin dark inner layer that commonly is poorly developed or lacking, a middle thicker light intermediate layer which is the most coarsely crystalline layer, and a thin dark outer layer commonly obscured by recrystallization.
