- Diagnosis
- Vascular herbaceous plant, made of a most often undivided main axis, bearing on its whole surface spirally inserted appendages. The appendages are vegetative or fertile, upwards directed, showing either no division or, sometimes, one single dichotomy. The distal extremity of the vegetative appendages is flattened, sometimes palmate. The fertile appendages bear pairs of sessile sporangia at their distal extremity, the sporangia being placed in the prolongation of the appendage. Sporangia are semicircular, semi-oval or fusiform in outline, showing a longitudinal dehiscence line. In a given pair of sporangia, dehiscence lines arc placed face to face. The plant is homosporous. Xylem stele is composed of several vascular strands. Each strand is made of primary xylem composed of some elements with annular or helical thickenings and of numerous rectangular to circular reticulate elements, with slightly bordered pits.
