Diagnosis
Trichomes multicellular, uniseriate, unbranched, not at all to slightly con- stricted at septa, not attenuated toward apices, enclosed by prominent, commonly hyaline, originally mucilaginous sheath. Filaments solitary or gregarious in entangled groups, straight, gently curved or tortuous, up to 1750 um long (incomplete filament). Cells, where preserved, distinct, contiguous with adjacent cell or evenly separated, isodiametric to commonly elongate, 10-27 um long and 8-14 um wide with average dimensions (88 cells measured in 8 trichomes) of 15.7 um long and 10.7 um wide; cells may be replaced by minerals, commonly iron oxides. Sheaths broad, hyaline to translucent with entire, undulate or crenate margins, commonly with mineral grains or wispy organic detritus adhering to external surfaces. Width of filaments including sheaths ranges from 45 to 65 um with an average diameter (16 filaments measured) of 56 um.
