Diagnosis
Cordaitalean plant bearing very small, densely positioned, helically arranged, linear, broadly attached leaves with a rounded apex and near-parallel venation. Pollen cones consisting of a primary axis with helically arranged, awl-shaped bracts, each bearing a single dwarf shoot in its axil; pollen dwarf shoots consisting of numerous helically arranged, small scale leaves; apical scale leaves bearing terminal pollen sacs; pollen saccate, alete, with a large wing-like saccus. Ovulate cones compact, consisting of helically arranged bracts, each bearing a single ovulate dwarf shoot in its axil; ovulate-cone bracts similar in morphology and epidermal anatomy to those of pollen cones; ovulate dwarf shoots reduced to a few sterile triangular scales forming a small, bud-like structure enveloping a single terminal, erect ovule with an apical notch. Seeds platyspermic, heart shaped, with clear differentiation of nucellus and wing-like integument.
