- Frustules heterovalvate, with domed valves. Type 1 valves with one type of spine, generally few in number, or two types of spine, whereby the second type is a megaspine. Type 2 valves with one or two spine types, generally greater in number (often twice as many spines as on Type 1 valves). No portulae. Marine, planktonic.
