- Stem with endarch primary xylem throughout the stele, protoxylem bordering on vertical rows of large parenchyma cells 50-60t in diameter, small pith cells associated with a vascular bundle forming a crescent-shaped mass internal to the large paren- chyma cells and primary xylem. Primary xylem annular, spiral, and scalariform in a narrow tran- sition zone. Secondary xylem with tracheids hav- ing circular bordered pitg on their radial walls; bordered pits usually uniseriate, seldom more than biseriate; rays uniseriate, usually 1-2 cells in height; pitting on tracheid-ray cell contact faces in clusters; borders on tracheid side narrower than those of ordinary bordered pits. Endarch leaf trace undivided at edge of pith, dividing into several strands in cortex and leaf base.
