- Diagnosis
- Leaf pinnate, at least 21 cm wide, 24 cm long, terminal pinna slightly fused basally to first lateral pinna pair, lateral pinna pairs typically 4 but vary from 3 to 5, attached to rachis laterally and oppositely; pinnae narrow, elongate, clubshaped, typically 10-18 cm long, 1-4 cm wide, pinna apex at least 3.5 times wider than base, rounded-somewhat flattened and sinuous; pinna
bases typically with 8 parallel veins, anastomosing and bifurcating frequently to a concentration of 3 or 4 per mm, terminating in pinna apices or upper
lateral margins; rachis and petiole 3-6 mm wide, petiole base broad; cuticle approximately 1.5 um thick; upper cuticle epidermal cells non-papillate,
generally square to rectangular, 25-62 um long, 31-44 um wide, in longitudinal files, anticlinal walls mostly straight but irregularly thickened;
epidermal cells of lower cuticle mostly irregularly arranged, rectangular to somewhat ovoid, 21-43 um long, 13-38 um wide, anticlinal walls straight but irregularly thickened, many cells bearing a single median papilla on the periclinal wall, papillae typically 8-11 um tall, 10-13 um in diameter;
epidermal cells of abaxial pinna margin elongate, 25-42 um long, 15 20,urn wide, nonpapillate, in longitudinal files typically eight cells wide; epidermal cells of rachis elongate, in longitudinal files, up to 75 um long, 25 um wide; stomata syndetocheilic (paracytic), rare on upper cuticle and rachis, more common on lower cuticle intercostal regions, scattered or in irregular files,
oriented perpendicular or slightly oblique to venation, subsidiary cells rectangular, up to 28 um long, 20 um wide, often bearing papillae which sometimes overhang epistomatal pit, guard cell dorsal thickenings typically 25 um long, 5 um wide with fine radiating striations on the lower surface, guard cell polar appendages extend beyond polar cell proximal walls, entire stomatal apparatus sometimes surrounded by a ring of up to 9 cells.
