Leaves elongate, needle-shaped; cuticles with guard cells sunken deep into the epidermis at the bottom of stomatal crypt; each crypt several cells deep and with usually one stoma at the bottom; crypt wall cells papillate, with papillae projecting in multiple tiers of rings.
