- Small, spinose involucres with fibrous bodies, shield-shaped with a deeply cordate base and pointed apex; involucre enclosing up to three ovoid nutlets; central nutlet larger, flanked by 2 smaller nutlets; ovule attached to a central septum in apical portion of the larger nutlet; central body of involucre with 4 or 5 major parallel veins that branch laterally, periphery of involucre expanded into a prominent flange; flange densely covered with helically arranged, branched spines. Peduncle long, covered with two sizes of trichomes.
