- Shoots bearing helically arranged leaves. Leaves thick, scale-like, adpressed, slightly
imbricate, mostly elliptical in shape and 1´5±2mm long and 1±1´5mm wide. Free apex short, usually
less than one ®fth of total length. Leaf apex obtuse or obtusely rounded. Leaf hypostomatic. Epidermal
cells polygonal, rectangular or isodiametric. Hypodermal cells below abaxial surface elongate with acute
ends. Stomatal chambers mostly ellipsoidal and longitudinal, sparse, irregularly distributed, usually about
10±12 per leaf. More than one stoma sunken deeply in chamber, concealed under short, robust papillae
arising from subsidiary and surrounding epidermal cells. Cuticles of both surfaces consisting of an
outer, mainly amorphous cuticle proper and an inner, ®brillate cuticular layer. A peripheral
polylamellate zone and a basal amorphous zone usually present. Cuticle of hypodermis composed
only of cuticular layer.
